My search on one branch is dead ending in Clinton County. I would love it if anyone has any small bit of information that could open up my search again.
My 3rd great grandmother and grandfather are shown as having been born in Clinton county, one in West Chazy and one in Mooers.
I am looking for Giles Randlet (or Randlett), born July 16, 1845 in West Chazy. And Delphine Bassett (or Bassette), born July 23, 1843. I don't have a date of marriage for them, but one child Mary J Randlett was also born in New York, estimated in 1867 but not definite. Sometime between then and 1869 (estimate) they made their way to Iowa. I found them both on Find a Grave, which is where the birth and death dates were confirmed.
Any leads would be very much appreciated. I have yet to see mention of parents.

John,
The earliest census I had was 1880. Thank you so much for the information you were able to provide. I forget to look at siblings of my direct ancestors. I get so stuck on direct lineage that I forget a sibling's descendants may have made great progress than those also connected in my direct line. In fact I got as far as I did because a clue opened up when I found a Great grandmother on someone's tree who wasn't even a part of her blood line at all. There was a marriage or two that had connected them.
I will look into the additional information you have found. I had found the photo of Giles and the info of the other children. In the history of Clinton, it said there were many that settled there from Canada, so I even went looking in Canadian records. But the information about NH and ME and the spelling change could be very helpful. I will follow those leads for what I find.
So many different places to look. I get a little overwhelmed with how to keep my information and records organized. I'm certain I'll find a good system as I continue to get more experienced.
Carrie

Oh my heavens. I just googled Giles Rundlett and the very first thing that came up was a book on the Adirondack Regiment from NY, with Giles Rundlett listed, the correct age he'd be that year from Chazy NY, where he was born. It said "also born as Rondelet". The tiniest clue can open everything back up. Thank you!!

Yes, there are many entries for Private Giles in the records. Also, his pension paid to his wife is listed. Quite a bit on familysearch.org but more on ancestry.com.
A "soundex" search will give you all the variations of the Randlet surname. There's a history of the New Hampshire area where they were from, and it says the original settler was captured by indians. It says he may have been from England (homesteader) or from Canada.
My last name has many variations in family records passed down to me and in the censuses. I've found two more since digging through the census. My great grandparents had unique first names (Jeremiah/Jerry and Aurelia) plus some unique children's names that helped me find more about them. In fact, that is why I recently started looking at Schuyler Falls in Clinton County. The 1850 census has them there at 21 and 19 years old with last name Demores. Before that, I found them in Theresa near Watertown, NY in 1860 as Delamare. My grandparent's 1908 Church marriage document from Newton Falls (St Lawrence Cty) is Desmarais. Some great uncles used Damara or Demera. Most settled on DeMar (once they learned to read & write and blend in with the Anglophones, I suppose). I've found all descendants down to living relatives (three who are into genealogy).
I have traced all other lines in my family back to original Quebec settler in the 1600's and back to France... except for my own last name! -John
